How Dubrovnik become Game of Thrones Kings Landing?
Just by looking at Dubrovnik game of thrones map you will realize why Dubrovnik was a perfect filming location for Kings Landing. It is always amazing to see how someone's imagination becomes reality. George R.R. Martin started writing his famous fictional novels "A Song of Ice and Fire" at the same time Dubrovnik was under siege and heavy bombed during Croatian war for independence. During those hard times for all Dubrovnik locals, it was hard to imagine that our town will soon become the capital of Seven Kingdoms and well known as Kings Landing. If someone then told us that grenades will soon be replaced by dragons and we will be occupied by hordes of happy tourists we would call him crazy. But the reality is often stranger than fiction and Dubrovnik survived that terrible war, fought its freedom and become known as Kings Landing for millions of Game of Thrones fans. The first book by R.R. Martin named The Game of Thrones was finished and published in 1996. It soon became hugely successful, winning the hearts of critics and readers alike. A plot of Game of Thrones book is taking place in Westeros, the biggest and the most important continent of Martins imaginary land. The first book is introducing us with the history of Seven Kingdoms and their constant battle for an Iron Throne.
Even this fictional novel was brilliantly written it would never accomplish such a huge global success if HBO did not decide to make a fantasy serial based on it. The first series was screened in 2011 and we are just witnessing the last 8th season in 2019. Altogether HBO broadcasted 69 episodes of Game of Thrones. During these 8 years, GoT became one of the most popular TV series of all times, and also the most pirated TV show ever. Filming and production of Game of Thrones took place in 8 different countries and Croatia was one of them.

The main Game of Thrones - Kings Landing Attraction Dubrovnik City Walls
As you are probably aware the Old town of Dubrovnik is surrounded by two kilometer long old defensive walls from the 13th century. They are a reason number one for most of the tourists to visit Dubrovnik and the most visited attraction with over one million visitors per year.
Many scenes of Kings Landing where filmed on Dubrovnik city walls and its forts and towers. Even you can visit most of filming Game of Thrones locations without buying a ticket for Dubrovnik City Walls we recommend you to buy it and climb on the wall. This wall is not 200 meters high and 500 kilometers long like The Wall from The North, but it is still a pretty impressive structure.
Walking around Dubrovnik city walls will give you special insight into Old Towns architecture and you will understand why was Dubrovnik selected to represents Kings Landing. You will able to walk through many famous filming Game of Thrones locations that happened on the walls or in some of the city towers. The bonus that you get when buying Dubrovnik City walls ticket is that you can visit Fort Lovjenac (Red Keep) with the same ticket.

1 - Park Gradac - This park was used for filming The Purple Wedding between King Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell.
One of the most horrifying scenes in all Game of Thrones seasons was filmed at Park Gradac. At the same time, all of us GoT fans were glad to see that evil little prick of a King die like that on his Purple Wedding. This lovely green park is position near Dubrovnik City Walls and if you are visiting Dubrovnik with your car it is good to know that there is a big (not big enough during summer months) parking on that location.
It is an ideal place to start your independent Game of Thrones - Kings Landing - Dubrovnik Tour. To be honest, it is hard to imagine King Joffrey cutting cake in Park Gradac with his big sword, but you can still find pigeons flying around. We advise you to take a walk through the park before entering the crowded streets of the Dubrovnik Old Town. Just a few minutes walk from here will take you to the next two Game of Thrones filming locations.

2 - Fort Lovrijenac - The most important fort in Kings Landing The Red Keep.
It watches and guards Blackwater Bay and it is a home of a king and his family. You will need to buy a ticket for Dubrovnik City walls to enter inside Fort Lovrijenac and visit all filming scenes locations from The Red Keep. The other FREE option is to follow the path from Pier in Kings Landing harbor and climb up in the park near the entrance to the Fort Lovrijenac. You will have a nice view from there to other filming sites that took place in Kings Landing harbor and also on Dubrovnik City Walls.
3 - Pier under the Pile Gate
A place where a Battle of the Blackwater took place and Wildfire was used Blackwater Bay.
It is just a Pier ;) There are a nice fish restaurant and cafe near it. From here you can reach an Old Town entrance at the Pile gate in just a few minutes. It is the main entrance to the Kings Landing, so enjoy entering our hometown. It is interesting that during one part of Dubrovnik history, everyone entering the Old Town through Pile Gate had to bring a piece of rock to help in building and upgrading Dubrovnik City Walls. If you decide you want to visit Kings Landing harbor before going to Dubrovnik Old Town main street Stradun then just enter the park under the Pile gate and you will be on that filming location in a minute.

4 - Beach in Pile harbor
Used for filming Kings Landing Harbour scenes.
Wildfire in Blackwater from Fort Bokar
When standing on the beach of Kings Landing harbor (Probably surrounded with kayaks) on your left side you will see Fort Bokar and in front of you, there is a Fort Lovrjenac (Red Keep). From the second season onwards this beach was used for several naval Dubrovnik Game of Thrones. scenes.
5 - Fort Bokar
One of the most used filming Game of Thrones location.
Fort Bokar and Pile Bay
This fort is placed on South-western part of Dubrovnik City Walls and it was used to defend it from the sea. All Game of Thrones fans will easily recognize it. Some of the opening scenes of second Game of Thrones season were filmed here and on the fort Lovrijenac. The legendary scene with Spider and Tyrion Lannister standing on the Fort Bokar and talking about the future of the Kings Landing was one of the most memorable ones. To access Fort Bokar you will need to buy Dubrovnik City Walls Ticket (Or good climbing equipment and some skills:)).
6 - Fort Minceta The main Dubrovnik fort was not duplicating The Kings Landing but a part of the City of Qarth - The House of Undying.
Fort Minceta is the biggest and the most beautiful fort on Dubrovnik city walls. It is the first fort you see when you are approaching Dubrovnik Old Town with your car. We must disappoint you and tell you that there are no Dragons in Fort Minceta, but we are sure that you will find an entrance into its interior much easier than Daenerys Targaryen did. Minceta was built during the 12th and 13th century and it is interesting that citizens od Dubrovnik used it as a shelter during Croatian war for Independence. Strong walls of Minceta Tower provided protection against hundred of grenades falling on the Old Town.

7 - The Walk of Shame streets and a Red Keep Gate Dubrovnik Ploce Gate
If you are entering Dubrovnik Old Town from the east you will use Ploce Gate to enter. Just continue walking and soon you will be standing on the bridge that was used to represent a Red Keep Gate. The part of The Walk of Shame scenes was filmed here and if you continue walking (You don't have to be naked, some tourist did that, but it is not cool) downhill you will recognize a few more filming locations. Beautiful oval stairs in front of the Dominican monastery are the most recognizable from the series, but that whole street from the Ploce gate to the Stradun was used several times in different Game of Thrones scenes.

8 - Jesuit Stairs from the Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Walk of Shame starting scene.
In my opinion, this is the most recognizable Game of Thrones filming location in Dubrovnik. Before reaching Jesuit Stairs you will pass through the square of Ivan Gundulic with his statue in the middle of it. There is also a green Old City market located in this square. Use this opportunity to buy some authentical local souvenir, like small bags of Lavender to refresh your memory on Dubrovnik and Kings Landing every time you smell it. Climb up the Walk of Shame stairs and you will find yourself on the highest city square in front of Jesuits Church of Saint Ignatius.
"When you play a Game of Thrones you win or you die. There is no middle ground."

9 - Littlefingers Brothel is located at Dubrovnik Ethnographic Museum :)
Even this may be disappointing for a part of our younger male readers Dubrovnik Ethnographic Museum is not a Brothel in real life, but some fascinating scenes from Kings Landing were filmed on this site. While here we advise you to visit the Ethnographic Museum and learn about Dubrovnik cultural heritage and history.
10 - Trial by combat filming location at hotel Belveder
Terraces in front of Abandoned Hotel Belveder were used to film a legendary Game of Thrones trial by combat scene that our favorite dwarf Lord Tyrion Lannister sadly lost. Lucky for him it was not his head that was crushed by The Mountain, but the Oberyn Martells one. If you are not too lazy, take 20 minutes to walk from the Old Town and visit this location. Hotel Belveder was destroyed during the Croatian War for Independence and still not rebuilt, but it looks like it soon should be. This means that this filming location will be lost forever. I must say that this is one of my favorite Game of Thrones Dubrovnik filming locations with an astonishing view to the Old Town and the Island of Lokrum.

11 - The Island of Lokrum with an original Iron Throne
from Game of Thrones
Lokrum is situated in front of the old town of Dubrovnik and you can easily recognize that beautiful green island on many Dubrovnik photos. It takes just 15 minutes of slow boat ride from the old towns to harbor to get to this special forest and vegetation reserve. Many legends are connected with the island of Lokrum and it represents an inseparable part of the City of Dubrovnik. Spending one day at Lokrum is our recommendation for all tourist during their holidays in Dubrovnik.
Dubrovnik Island of Lokrum
Even there are NO sandy beaches on the island you will find untouched nature interested by many small and sometimes hidden paths leading you to beautiful places. It is a perfect place to run from crowded streets of the old town and spend some time meditating and watching rabbits and peacocks (I am sure that you remember all that golden peacocks decorating the city of Qarth) roaming around. There are also several old structures on the Lokrum that you can visit. Some of them were used for filming a Game of Thrones Dubrovnik scenes. Lokrum was presented as a city of Qarth and a House of the Undying was filmed on some locations on Lokrum.
For the Game of Thrones fans, there is also the biggest delicacy of all hidden on the island - An original Iron Throne! Visiting an island just to take a picture of yourself sitting on The Iron Thron is worthwhile for all GoT fans. If your ad to that a museum with a special Game of Thrones section than Lokrum is becoming an ultimate location for all series fans.
I will do what queens do, I will rule

Dubrovnik Republic Rectors Palace Home of the King of Spices
Rectors Palace was a heart of Dubrovnik Republic. It was a home of the most powerful person in the Republic but also had some other interesting functions during those times. It has prison cells in its basements that tourist can visit the same as a museum telling different stories from the life of Dubrovnik aristocracy and history of the Republic. It was used to film Game of Thrones scenes from the second season when Daenerys Targaryen tried to get ships from the city of Qarth aristocracy. The King of Spices, second most rich man in the City of Qarth, was living in the Rectors Palace.

Arboretum Trsteno - The Gardens of The Red Keep (Outside Dubrovnik)
The Arboretum in Trsteno is home to many small and big plants from all over the world. Its gardens have been enriched by hundreds of different species of plans during the last 500 years. The most impressing ones are two gigantic 450 years old plane trees at the entrance of the arboretum. The easiest way to reach it is by taking some of the local bus lines. It is a short ride, just 20 - 25 minutes from Dubrovnik.
The main point of Arboretum is the summer residence of one of the Dubrovnik Republics aristocratic families from the 15th century. In front of its main gate, there is a garden and a lovely terrace with a stunning view of the Adriatic Sea and local islands. All Game of Thrones Fans will recognize this site as The Gardens of the Red Keep. Even Arboretum Trsteno is not our first pick of the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones filming locations it is undoubtedly a beautiful place to visit. Connecting it with your trip to Ston and Peljesac peninsula would be a smart move for all tourists.

The main entrance to the Kings Landing Dubrovnik Pile Gate
Pile Gate was probably used the most times for different Game of Thrones scenes. This is the main entrance to the Dubrovnik Old Town and every real GoT fan will surely enjoy walking through it. The most memorable scene that took place on this spot was when Kings Landing citizens started rebelling against King Joffrey and someone from the crowd shot him with a piece of dirt/s***. This is also the most crowded place in Dubrovnik during high season so try avoiding it during rush hours if possible.
